w00tyd00d
Thought ya'll might be interested in reading this. I really like how the community is coming together to make their own achievements, I think that's what they (the devs) want you to do too. But going by this article, they may not even add achievements at all. They don't want players to have an "ending" point in free-play mode; story mode (aka level progression) is a totally different story. As far as story mode goes though, I feel like they'll make their own objectives you need to overcome, rather than giving you a list of achievements to get. I could be wrong though and they could add some in in the final product, but I honestly think it'd be a smart thing not to do. If ANYTHING just add an achievement for completing the story mode just to give the players something for beating the game. EDIT: I know the article's a little long but it's really interesting and it gives a great insight to games as a whole, not just Don't Starve. Excess
Well sir steam achievements are just there for fun things to do.Not really. Apparently, achievements affects you on a subconscious level. It's a Pavlov kind of thing, where when you collect every achievement possible you stop playing. That's counter-productive on a game like Don't Starve, and a sign of either A) the devs are just following a trend without researching into it === sloppy devs, or B) the devs want you to keep hunting meaningless objectives so you thing you got your times worth from the game when you didn't === greedy devs.At least that's how I see it.Read the article w00tyd00d posted, it's co-written between our very own Kevin and Klei's founder Jamie Cheng. So that's the closest you'll ever had to an official response as to why Don't Starve isn't the kind of game made for achievements.agreed, still none of the Devs has replied to this topicIf they didnt want achievements at all, iam sure the would close it by nowThey already expressed their feelings about achievements on previous threads. Also, bear in mind that they'll never close a thread just because they disagree with an idea. Before the official multiplayer announcement, there where literally 1 new multiplayer/co-op thread created per day. All they did was asking us to merge them down in a single topic to keep the forums organized, but they never discouraged the discussion, even though they always knew they weren't going to add it.Achievements is a no-go, specially lame ones like "collect 50 grass" or "survive the first night". 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/1961-dont-starve-achievements-generator/#findComment-53024 Share on other sites

We have a pretty hands-off policy about threads and opinions here, so long as things remain civil. If we started shutting things down that we didn't agree with, this place would become an echo chamber pretty quick.Personally, I've never been a big fan of achievements. This is speaking as both a gamer, and as a developer who has had to put achievements into games before. It is a platform requirement on XBLA that every game has leaderboards and a certain number of achievements. They do this because they're trying to promote xbox live, but I don't think that its appropriate for all games. There was a Jon Blow interview a couple of years back where he voiced the problems with this more eloquently than I can: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/134595/catching_up_with_jonathan_blow.phpWill Don't Starve ever have achievements? If I can think of a meaningful and congruous way to incorporate them, I might. But given my personal distaste for them, it has not been a priority. Syd
I'm kind of neutral towards achievements. I like the ones that actually reward difficult or interesting feats (the gnome achievement in HL2: Ep2 was a memorable one), but I get a bit annoyed by achievements that you get very easily through normal gameplay ("Achievement unlocked: You ate food!"), though I'm pretty sure that most achievements like that were put in because the 360 requires a certain number of achievements and it just wasn't worth the time to program in some really interesting ones.I think Don't Starve would be just fine without achievements, though I wouldn't mind their inclusion if they're interesting, or they're for things that the game already presents as goals (like unlocking characters or beating story mode). Peculiar
I never really noticed it before but games that do have achievements really do have that kind of effect at times. I think in a game where the story mode is the main feature and a player goes off the beaten path, discovering something and messing with the game; then achievements can be fun. But with games that are based around an open world with no end, they do destroy what the game is meant for. (as the article showed!) So I'm completely fine with no achievements, besides achievements are too mainstream.
